Notion vs Microsoft Copilot
Notion AI and Microsoft Copilot help with different piles of work. This comparison shows a small team how to choose without paying for both by accident.
On this page
Notion and Microsoft Copilot get compared because both will draft a paragraph. That is the least interesting thing about them. One is a workspace where AI sits inside your notes. The other is Microsoft’s assistant, and the name covers more than one product. Last reviewed October 2026. No productivity scores.
Separate the Microsoft products first
Microsoft Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com is a consumer chat. On paid Microsoft 365 plans, Copilot also shows up inside Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and other apps. Those are different buys. A small team that “uses Office” may not have the in-app assistant on their current licenses. Read the plan page for the specific app you care about. A chat in the browser is not the same as a rewrite inside the contract you already have open.
Notion is a workspace for documents, notes, and light databases. Notion AI drafts and summarizes inside those pages. A free workspace exists. Whether AI is included or added is a pricing-page question, and the answer has changed before. Look it up the week you decide.
| Question | Notion | Microsoft Copilot |
|---|---|---|
| The home of the work | Pages and databases you build | Microsoft apps, or a separate chat |
| Pricing model | Free and paid plans | Free and paid plans, depending on which Copilot |
| Strong fit | A wiki, a lightweight CRM, meeting notes you wrote | Documents and mail that already live in Microsoft 365 |
| Easy mistake | Moving the whole company into Notion for an AI button | Buying the chat and thinking the Word button is included |
| Official site | notion.com | copilot.microsoft.com |
A test that respects the pile you have
Do not migrate to test. For one week, use each tool on work that is already in its house.
In Notion, take a messy project page and ask for a summary, a task list, and a shorter client update. Check the task list against the page. The tool will invent an owner if you let it.
In Microsoft’s world, take a real document or thread you are allowed to use and ask for a shorter version or a reply. If the in-app assistant is not on your license, do not pretend the consumer chat is the same test. Note that it is a different product and decide if the chat alone is worth it.
What neither tool is
Neither is a system of record for money. Do not let a summary become the invoice. Neither is a place for secrets you would not put in a shared doc. If a client forbids third-party AI on their files, that rule beats a feature list.
If the pain is calls rather than documents, a notetaker such as Otter.ai or Fireflies.ai is the closer category. Read how to choose an AI notetaker before you add a third subscription “for notes.”
Keep one home
A solo business gets slower when notes exist in Notion, in a Microsoft chat, and in someone’s inbox. Pick the home you will search six months from now. Let the assistant live there. The other login can stay on a free tier or go away.
Questions this guide answers
Is Microsoft Copilot one product?
No. There is a consumer chat and there is assistance inside Microsoft 365 apps on paid plans. Decide which one you mean before you compare it with Notion.
Does Notion's free plan include AI?
Check Notion's current pricing page. AI has been packaged separately at times. Do not assume the workspace you already pay for includes it.
Which one should a solo consultant buy?
Buy the one that sits where the work already is. If the work is in Word, Excel, and Outlook, look at Microsoft 365. If the work is a wiki you built in Notion, start there.
