How to read an AI pricing page

A checklist for AI pricing pages: free versus trial, what is metered, annual traps, and why Umee will not quote a price for you.

On this page

AI pricing pages are designed to be glanced at. The number in the biggest type is rarely the number you will pay. This is a way to read the page slowly. It applies to every tool in the directory. Last reviewed October 2026. Umee still will not print the prices. They would be stale.

Find the three words that change the meaning

Free plan. You can keep using a limited product without a card, or with a card that is not charged. Limits are real. Write them down.

Trial. Access ends on a date. A trial of a paid product does not make the product free. If the page says “start free” next to a credit card and a date, assume it is a trial until you prove otherwise.

Annual. The small monthly number is often the annual price divided by twelve, billed now. Look for a monthly toggle and for the amount due today. If you are still evaluating, do not pay for a year.

Umee’s labels match this split. “Free” means the product is offered at no charge. “Free and paid plans” means an ongoing no-cost tier exists. “Paid” means you should expect to pay, even if a trial is on the page.

    Find the meter

The seat price is not always the meter. Look for credits, generations, minutes of video, resolved conversations, contacts, or “fair use.” Ask which meter you would hit in a normal week, not in the demo. A cheap seat with an expensive meter is not a cheap seat.

Video, voice, and support bots are the usual surprises. A writing chat is more often limited by messages. Still read the line. “Unlimited” on a banner and a fair-use paragraph in the footer can both be true, and the footer is the one that binds you.

Find who the plan is for

A personal plan and a company plan are different products sharing a logo. Check whether you can have more than one user, whether an admin can remove someone, and whether private customer data is allowed. If you are a company, a personal plan that forbids business use is not a bargain. It is a terms problem.

    Screenshot the decision

Save the pricing page as a PDF or a screenshot with the date in the filename. Note the plan name and the meter. When the vendor changes the page, you will still know what you thought you bought. If the invoice does not match the screenshot, that is a support conversation with the vendor, not a mystery.

    Then decide monthly

Pay monthly for the first period. Put a reminder three days before renewal. If you did not use the tool, cancel. The one-person stack is built on that habit. Annual billing is for a tool that has already survived a boring month, not for a launch-day mood.

    Questions this guide answers

    Why doesn't Umee list prices?

Because they change, often without a new blog post. The official pricing page is the quote. Umee only records free, free and paid plans, or paid.

Is a free trial the same as a free plan?

No. A trial ends. A free plan continues with limits. Umee calls a product paid if the ongoing product is a subscription, even when a trial exists.

    What should I screenshot?

The plan name, the date, what is metered, and whether you clicked annual billing. Future you will not remember.
