AI customer support tools

How to choose between a full helpdesk and a lighter chat widget, and what to write down before any bot answers a customer.

Support software is sold with a promise that the bot will “deflect” tickets. Deflection is only a kindness if the answer is right. If it is wrong, you have hidden a problem and created a second one. This shortlist separates full suites from lighter widgets. It was last reviewed October 2026 and it is not a ranking.

Suites, when support is already a job

Intercom is a paid messaging platform with an AI agent that answers from a help center, plus an inbox for everything else. The AI meter is often separate from the seat price. Read that line on the current pricing page before you turn the agent on. Point it only at articles you have reviewed this month.

Zendesk is a paid ticket suite: email, help center, chat, and AI features that summarize and suggest replies. It fits a team that already thinks in tickets and macros. A suggested reply is a draft. An agent should still send it, especially when the answer is a refund, a legal line, or an exception.

Freshdesk is Freshworks’ helpdesk, with free and paid plans and AI features that depend on the edition. It is a reasonable suite when you want tickets and a knowledge base without starting from an enterprise contract. Confirm which AI features your edition includes. Do not assume the demo workspace matches the plan you will be invoiced for.

Pick a suite when more than one person answers customers and you are losing track of who replied. Do not pick one because the chatbot animation looked smooth.

Lighter widgets, when the site is the whole company

Tidio and Crisp put a chat widget and a shared inbox on a small site. Both publish a free plan and paid plans. They fit a shop or a studio that wants a box on the website before it wants a ticket taxonomy. Check what the free plan will actually automate. A widget that only says “we’ll email you” is an honest widget. A widget that invents your return policy is not.

Keep office hours visible. If nobody is there on Sunday, the bot should say so.

    Before any bot answers

Write ten questions you answered twice last month, and write the answer you want sent. That page is the product. The tool is a delivery mechanism. Then:

    1. Turn the bot on for those ten questions only, if the product allows a limit.
    2. Read every conversation for a week.
    3. Add a question only after the answer has been right several times.
    4. Leave a path to a person in the first screen, not after a loop.

If the tool cannot be limited to known answers, do not use it for customers yet. Use it to draft replies that a human sends. That is still a time saving, and it is harder to do damage.

    Questions this guide answers

Can a bot replace the support inbox?

No. It can answer questions you have already written down. Everything else needs a person and a visible way to reach that person.

Which tool should a new shop start with?

A shared inbox you will actually read. Tidio or Crisp are lighter. Intercom, Zendesk, and Freshdesk are suites. Do not buy a suite to avoid writing a help article.

    Does Umee rank support bots?

No. There is no resolution-rate score on this page. Ask each vendor what they meter, then test with your real questions.
