Perplexity and Gemini Notebook both answer questions. They draw the answer from different places, and that difference is the whole comparison. One looks across the public web and shows citations. The other works from sources you put in a notebook. Last reviewed October 2026. We did not score factual error rates.

    The two jobs

Perplexity is an answer engine. You ask something you do not yet have a file for, and you get a written answer plus links. Free and paid plans are published. Use it to discover what to read. The links are the product. The paragraph is a guide to the links, and it can still misstate them.

Gemini Notebook is Google’s research notebook, previously widely known as NotebookLM. The address notebooklm.google.com now leads to this product at notebook.google.com. You add sources and ask questions against those sources. It is offered with a Google account. The boundary is the point: you are not asking it to roam. You are asking it to work inside a packet you assembled. Check quotes against the file anyway.

How to use them together without making a mess

Start in Perplexity when you do not know the sources. Open the citations. Download or save the ones that are real. Put those files, and only those files, into a notebook if you are allowed to. Ask the notebook for a summary and a list of disagreements between the files. Then read the disagreements yourself. Disagreements are where client work hides.

Do not paste the notebook summary back into Perplexity and ask it to “confirm.” You will get confidence, not confirmation.

    Confidential work

A prospect’s unreleased numbers, a draft report, and a data room do not go into a personal research account. If you need a notebook for that work, use an account and a tool your contract allows. If none is allowed, use neither product. The old way, reading the PDF, still works.

For academic papers specifically, Elicit, Consensus, and SciSpace are filed under research on Umee and may be the closer tools. They are described in the research shortlist.

    What to pay for

Pay when you hit a limit on work you are already doing, not when a banner offers a larger model. If the free tier of Perplexity answers the discovery questions you have, stay there. If the notebook is included with the Google account you already use, do not buy a second research subscription out of habit.

    Questions this guide answers

Is Gemini Notebook the same as NotebookLM?

It is the notebook product people knew as NotebookLM. Google now presents it as Gemini Notebook. Confirm the current name and access rules on notebook.google.com.

    Which one is more trustworthy?

Neither is a source. Perplexity points at pages. Gemini Notebook points at files you added. You still read the underlying material before you cite it.

Can I upload client files to either?

Only if the client allows it and the account is an approved one. A personal login is the wrong place for confidential material.
